Musical Analysis #1- Motherly Love
String Cheese – Hannah Harper - 2026, USA.
About a week ago I was watching the new season of American
Idol when I heard this beautiful voice singing her original song, String Cheese.
Hannah Harper didn’t just sing a song; she shared a story that so many would
relate to. She used lyrics, rhythm, and melody to bring such moments to many
viewers.
Melody
The melody in String Cheese is simple with no big
leaps or runs. Hannah doesn’t use a big, overly dramatic range that we usually
hear in our mainstream music genres. This decision to keep the melody flatter
helps this song be more emotional and allows listeners to really feel the lyrics.
The grounded melody creates a sense of intimacy and authenticity that makes you
feel like she’s telling a story rather than just performing a song.
Rhythm
Similarly to the melody, the rhythm is steady and smooth in
this piece. There are many different versions of this song available, and I believe
the rhythm she brings through each time is nostalgic. For me personally, it
brings back moments of Allison Kraus in the backseat of my mom’s Dodge Intrepid
that are engrained in the back of my brain of the ‘good times’ for us.
Lyrics
The lyrics in this song are so absolutely touching. They
touch on so many pieces of being a mother that you don’t even expect to feel.
Someone validating that you feel like running away but you know that you couldn’t
go a minute without thinking or worrying about your kids is something that you
never expect to hear in a song. The lyrics bring tears to my eyes every time I
listen to the song.
“I never knew this is what my twenties would look like, but
they saved me before I had the chance to waste my life”. The contrast there is
deafening for the ones who truly understand what it’s like. I never expected my
twenties to be filled with dirty diapers, extreme exhaustion, mind crushing
overstimulation, and that lack of sleep would be an understatement.
Not only was I brought to tears during her audition using
this song, but so was Carrie Underwood calling the song “moving” while dabbing her
tears away. Her audition has even gone viral now on Tik Tok with praise from relating
moms! Another country artist, Lauren Alaina even shared a video of herself, emotional,
as she heard the song for the first time.
By turning these moments of motherhood into poetry, Harper
reminds us that something as simple as string cheese can hold such emotional
meaning.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I’ve never been a mother, I can see how this song can be comforting and relatable for mothers. I’m not hugely into country music, but a country song that’s similar to this that always hits me hard is You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBDN8yWyNYU&list=RDlBDN8yWyNYU&start_radio=1). My dad used to listen to the song a lot when I was young, so it reminds me of my childhood. I can’t relate to it on a parental level, but I relate to its consensus about how fleeting childhood is. When I was a kid, I only wanted to be an adult, and now that I am one, I wish I had spent more time enjoying being a child than racing to become an adult.
