The Role of the Performer- Britney Spears
Biography
Britney Spears was a huge icon in the 90’s and early 2000’s and became one of the most influential pop performers of the generation. She was born on December 2, 1981, in Mississippi, she then moved to Louisiana where she was mostly raised. She started we career trying out for The Mickey Mouse Club, but she was denied sue to her age a referred to New York City producers. In NYC, Britney studied at the Professional Performing Arts School. (1)
In 1998, she went global with her hit single, “…Baby One More Time.” Her first album was also named ‘Baby One More Time’ and then came ‘Oops! I Did it Again’ which broke sales records and solidified her place in the music industry (2). Throughout her career, she had many successful albums including another hit song, “Toxic.”
Britney Spear is widely known not just for singing, but for her impact on pop performance, that combined singing, choreography, and visual production.
Role Of Britney Spears
Building on her fame, Britney Spears was and still is more than just a successful pop star. Spears started her career at the absolute perfect time. Pop music was in the process of blending high visual productions with musical performances. Britney swooped in and did just that. (1)(2)(3)
In the late 90’s to early 2000’s, music videos were HUGE and a significant factor in how people really enjoyed music. I remember growing up, getting ready for school and watching VH1 and MTV music videos. This just shows what a true, big impact visuals had on music. I can very clearly remember the schoolgirl outfit with the fluffy poofs in her pig tails and the airplane scene from her music videos as I’m sure most do. I believe she played a major role in where pop music and performances are today. (2)(3)
In addition, Britney Spears served as a cultural mirror, reflecting the pressures placed on young celebrities. Being so young in the industry, she has experienced some rough turmoil in her life that has been openly displayed for the world to see. She has allowed the world to see the effects thy being a young celebrity can have on trust, privacy, expectations, and the treatment of performers, especially young ones. (2)
Ultimately, Britney’s role in music history is rooted in her ability to transform songs into visual experiences, helping define what it meant to be a hit pop performer of the 21st century.
Musical Elements
Britney Spears has such a unique vocal delivery in all of her music but in ‘…Baby One More Time,” she uses a shift, breathy tone that gives her an innocent yet emotional sound. I enjoy this because it makes her lyrics feel more personable and relatable. I also love the uniqueness of pitch in all I’ve vocals all around. (1)(2)
The strong, steady beat is simple but catchy. It allows the song to be easily remembered and fun to listen to. I like the beat because it keeps the song entertaining and energetic without taking away from the vocal delivery. It allows the piece to feel balanced. (1)(3)

In “lucky” a key musical element is the storytelling in the lyrics. At certain points, Spears uses a soft talking voice to sort of foreshadow and reads a letter so the listeners can understand what’s going on. I believe this adds necessary drama to the piece so readers can’t confuse the meaning or feelings behind the piece. She sounds sad and heartbroken and allows for true deeper meaning about a girl who has everything but all she really wanted was to not feel lonely.

Britney Spears is definitely a pop icon. I also loved how you included a memory of watching VH1 and MTV music videos, it really shows the impact performers like Brittney have on the enjoyment of music. Something I find interesting is how in character she gets when she performs. You can see her acting and having a fun time on stage.
ReplyDeleteIt was cool to read about how you included "Lucky" which was a song that was still popular but not as big as her other hits. I never knew the lyrics behind "Lucky" cause I have never heard it before but after reading them I can definitely see how there is a deeper meaning behind them and it's not just another pop song. I wonder what inspired her to make the song or why she made it, either way great work!
